Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Gain advanced insights to the inner workings of the body with our Bachelor's in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Preparing you with hands-on, clinical training to help others
Diagnostic medical sonography is a multi-specialty profession comprising many diverse areas all using ultrasound as a primary technology. Doctors use ultrasound in women, men, and children to gain advanced insights into the inner workings of the body. In fact, after x-ray exams, ultrasound is the most utilized form of diagnostic imaging available today. Sonography uses the high frequency sound waves to obtain images of the human body. These images are used to diagnose disease and guide physicians during invasive procedures. Concordia University's four-year Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program will train you in anatomy, physiology and the art of scanning. In the first two years you will be taking Concordia core courses and prerequisite classes in preparation for a two-year professional and clinical training program through Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit or Ascension Providence, Southfield.
CUAA will continue to offer this program in 2025 and beyond

The degree includes two years of core requirements and prerequisite classes specific to the major. Then, qualified candidates may apply to the DMS program (see affiliates tab). Students should review program websites on the affiliates tab for additional details. All CUAA accredited partner programs in diagnostic medical sonography are full time offering students academic, clinical and real world experience in the field preparing them for the profession.
Certification
Sonographers are required to pass a national certification board. There are several to choose from depending on concentrations learned in the program and specialization. Click here for details on credentialing.

The pre-professional curriculum requires about 72 credits. This is a credit load of 18 credits per semester if taken in 4 semesters. The student is encouraged to use winterims and summers to level their credit load. During the professional program, students will progress through the clinical and didactic curriculum. To graduate, the student will have attained at least 1680 hours of clinical experience and maintain program specified grades and performance standards.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program is competitive and placement within an accredited partner affiliate program is not guaranteed. The major determinants for placement are GPA and interpersonal communication skills which are identified during the interview process. It is required that Sonography students maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete additional patient care pre-requisites as indicated by each program to be considered for program placement. Students in the DMS major are encouraged to review these requirements immediately as they are time sensitive. The clinical component is 18-24 consecutive months depending on the program affiliate chosen. CUAA has an affiliation in DMS with Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit and Ascension Providence, Southfield. Depending on the program, concentrations of sonography may vary.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is accredited upon recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
